Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreation Services

Over 20,000 individuals ages five to adult with mental, physical, developmental, sensory, emotional impairments and special needs are served annually through therapeutic recreation programs offered by Therapeutic Recreation Services, The program, which is a unit of the County of Sacramento, Department of Regional Parks, Recreation and Open Space, has been providing programs for 29 years.Services are provided in small group, large group and one-to-one settings and are offered at various community sites and in-home for clients unable to attend other programs. Types of programs offered include social clubs, camps, classes, special events, sports and fitness, travel and vocational training programs. Specially trained staff work with clients to teach leisure, social, community and independent living skills. The skills training promotes an independent leisure lifestyle and prepares clients for participation in regular community recreation activities.

TRS programs are funded primarily through participant fees, grants, fundraisers and donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations. For the past 24 years. The monies raised by The Great Race® has allowed Therapeutic Recreation Services to continue toward their goal, which is for each participant to attain their highest level of leisure independence. The Great Race® has also been a wonderful vehicle for increasing community awareness about disabilities and special needs and the need for ahealthy leisure lifestyle.
